Historic Downtown Liberty, Inc. (HDLI) is a new nonprofit corporation that is following the National Trust Main Street approach that has been used over the past 25 years to revitalize older traditional business districts throughout the United States. The Main Street strategy that HDLI has adopted is to encourage economic development within the context of historic preservation in a way that is appropriate to today's marketplace. The Main Street approach advocates rebuilding traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets, namely distinctive architecture and history, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership and a sense of community. Grassroots revitalization by volunteers will work in four main program areas that are also the four permanent committees of HDLI: Design, Economic Improvement, Promotion and Organization.
